The GEO Starter Kit: Everything You Need in One Checklist
New to Generative Engine Optimization? This checklist covers everything you need to start getting cited in AI search results.
You’ve heard us talk about GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) all year. You know it matters. But maybe you’re sitting there thinking, “Okay, but where do I actually start?”
Fair question. Let’s make this simple. Here’s your complete GEO starter kit: one checklist with everything you need to begin getting your business cited in AI search results. Bookmark this page. Print it out. Stick it on your wall. Whatever works.
Before You Start: What Is GEO?
Quick recap. GEO is the practice of optimizing your online presence so that AI search engines (Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT Search, Perplexity) are more likely to cite your business or content when generating answers.
It’s not a replacement for traditional SEO. It works alongside it. We broke down the full difference in our post on GEO vs SEO. For a deeper strategic framework, check out our step-by-step GEO guide.
Today is about practical action. Here’s the checklist.
Foundation Layer: Get Your House in Order
These are the prerequisites. Without them, nothing else matters.
- Your website loads in under 3 seconds. Speed affects crawlability and user experience. Test at pagespeed.web.dev.
- Your site is mobile-friendly. Test at search.google.com/test/mobile-friendly.
- You have an SSL certificate (HTTPS). Non-negotiable in 2025.
- Google can crawl your site. Check for crawl errors in Google Search Console.
- Your sitemap is submitted to Google Search Console. This helps all search engines discover your pages.
Structured Data Layer: Speak the AI Language
AI engines rely on structured data to understand your content. Get these implemented:
- LocalBusiness or Organization schema on your homepage or About page (include name, address, phone, hours, service area)
- FAQPage schema on any page with Q&A content
- Article or BlogPosting schema on all blog posts (include author, date, publisher)
- Product schema on product pages (if applicable, include price, availability, reviews)
- Service schema on service pages
- Validate all schema using Google’s Rich Results Test
We covered which schema types matter most in our post on structured data for local business.
Content Layer: Create Citable Content
AI engines cite content that is clear, authoritative, and well-structured. Audit your existing content and create new content with these principles:
- Every key page has a clear, direct answer in the first paragraph (answer the main question upfront, then expand)
- Use headers (H2, H3) to organize content logically by subtopic
- Include specific data points, statistics, and examples (AI engines prefer concrete information over vague claims)
- Write in a clear, authoritative voice (avoid hedging language like “maybe” or “it depends” without follow-up specifics)
- Create comprehensive FAQ content for your top 20 customer questions
- Publish original insights based on your expertise or data (AI engines prioritize unique information)
- Keep content updated with current dates, prices, and information
Authority Layer: Build Trust Signals
AI engines don’t cite random websites. They cite sources they consider authoritative. Build that authority:
- Complete author bios on all blog content (name, photo, credentials, experience)
- An About page that demonstrates E-E-A-T (experience, expertise, authority, trust)
- Consistent NAP (name, address, phone) across all directories and platforms
- Active Google Business Profile with regular posts and up-to-date information
- Strong review profile on Google (aim for 4.5+ stars with regular new reviews)
- Citations in reputable directories relevant to your industry
- Quality backlinks from relevant, authoritative websites
AI Platform Layer: Show Up Where AI Searches
Make your presence known on the platforms AI engines pull from:
- Google Business Profile fully optimized (this feeds directly into Google AI Overviews)
- Yelp listing claimed and complete (Perplexity and ChatGPT frequently cite Yelp)
- Industry directories relevant to your business (AI engines use these as verification)
- Social media profiles active and linked from your website (sameAs property in schema)
- Wikipedia or Wikidata presence if applicable (AI engines heavily weight these)
Content Format Checklist
When creating new content, run through these format checks:
- Does the title clearly state what the content is about?
- Does the first paragraph directly answer the main question?
- Are headers used to break content into scannable sections?
- Are lists and tables used where appropriate?
- Does the content include specific numbers, dates, or data points?
- Is the author clearly identified with credentials?
- Is there FAQ schema on Q&A sections?
- Are internal links pointing to related content on your site?
Monitoring Layer: Track Your Progress
- Set up a monthly AI visibility check. Search your top 10 queries on Google, ChatGPT, and Perplexity. Record where you appear.
- Monitor Google Search Console for changes in impressions and clicks, especially on queries where AI Overviews appear
- Track referral traffic from perplexity.ai and chatgpt.com in your analytics
- Set up Google Alerts for your business name to catch new mentions
Your First 30 Days
Don’t try to do everything at once. Here’s a prioritized timeline:
Week 1: Foundation layer. Fix any speed, mobile, or crawl issues. Submit your sitemap.
Week 2: Structured data layer. Add LocalBusiness and FAQPage schema. Validate everything.
Week 3: Content layer. Audit your top 10 pages for citability. Rewrite opening paragraphs to lead with clear answers. Create or expand your FAQ page.
Week 4: Authority and monitoring layer. Claim directory listings. Set up your monitoring routine. Plan ongoing content creation.
Keep Going
GEO isn’t a one-time project. It’s an ongoing practice, just like SEO. The businesses that consistently create authoritative, well-structured content and maintain strong trust signals across the web will continue to gain visibility as AI search grows.
