AI Search Tools Face-Off: Perplexity vs ChatGPT vs Gemini in 2025

We tested Perplexity, ChatGPT, and Gemini head-to-head for local business search. Here is which one wins and why it matters.

We are back with another head-to-head experiment. If you enjoyed our ChatGPT vs Google plumber test and our 5 AI chatbot marketing strategy showdown, you are going to love this one.

This time, we put the three biggest AI search tools against each other: Perplexity, ChatGPT Search, and Google Gemini. Same queries. Same expectations. Very different results.

The Test Setup

We asked each platform 10 local business search queries and scored them on five criteria:

  1. Accuracy (Are the business recommendations real and correct?)
  2. Relevance (Do the results match the query intent?)
  3. Detail (How much useful information is provided?)
  4. Source transparency (Does it cite where the information came from?)
  5. Actionability (Can you actually call, book, or visit based on the answer?)

Each criterion scored 1 to 5. Maximum score per query: 25. Maximum total: 250.

The Results

Overall Scores

PlatformTotal Score (out of 250)Average per Query
Perplexity19819.8
Gemini18618.6
ChatGPT Search18118.1

Perplexity wins, but the margins are closer than you might expect. Each platform has distinct strengths.

Perplexity: The Research Champion

Best at: Source transparency, accuracy, and detail.

Perplexity consistently cited its sources with inline references, making it easy to verify information. For the query “best Italian restaurant in Hoboken for date night,” Perplexity provided five options with specific details about ambiance, price range, and standout dishes, all with links to review sites and the restaurants’ own websites.

Weakest at: Actionability. While Perplexity provides great information, it often stops short of giving you a direct booking link or phone number. You know where to go, but you still need to take an extra step to make it happen.

Gemini: The Local Specialist

Best at: Local relevance and actionability.

No surprise here. Gemini is connected to Google Maps data, which gives it a massive advantage for local queries. For “emergency plumber near me available today,” Gemini pulled real-time availability data and provided business hours, phone numbers, and ratings directly from Google Business Profiles.

Weakest at: Source transparency. Gemini rarely tells you where its information comes from beyond “Google Maps” and “reviews.” When it summarizes reviews, you cannot easily trace which specific reviews it is referencing.

ChatGPT Search: The Conversational Contender

Best at: Conversational follow-ups and nuanced understanding.

When we asked “I need a dentist who is good with nervous patients and takes Aetna insurance in Bergen County,” ChatGPT Search understood the multi-layered intent better than the others. It provided recommendations that specifically addressed anxiety-friendly dentistry, not just generic dentist listings.

Weakest at: Accuracy for very local queries. ChatGPT occasionally recommended businesses that had closed or provided outdated addresses. Perplexity and Gemini were more reliable for current, real-time business data.

Category Breakdown

For Restaurant Recommendations

Winner: Perplexity. The detail and specificity of its restaurant recommendations were consistently the best. It would mention specific dishes, price ranges, and seating options.

For Home Services

Winner: Gemini. The connection to Google Maps data made it the most reliable for finding available plumbers, electricians, and HVAC companies with current contact information.

For Healthcare Providers

Winner: ChatGPT. The ability to understand complex queries with multiple criteria (insurance, specialization, patient comfort) gave ChatGPT a clear edge for healthcare searches.

For Comparison Shopping

Winner: Perplexity. When asked to compare multiple businesses or options, Perplexity’s structured, source-cited approach was the most useful and trustworthy.

What This Means for Your Business

The takeaway is not “optimize for Perplexity.” It is “optimize for all three, because different customers use different tools.”

To rank in Perplexity: Focus on being cited by authoritative sources. Build your presence on review sites, directories, and industry publications. Perplexity pulls heavily from these sources.

To rank in Gemini: Your Google Business Profile is everything. Complete profile, fresh photos, recent reviews, and accurate business information.

To rank in ChatGPT Search: Create detailed website content that addresses specific customer needs and scenarios. ChatGPT pulls from your website content more directly than the other two.

This is essentially the multi-platform approach we recommend in our GEO strategy guide.

The Convergence Trend

One interesting pattern: all three platforms are getting more similar over time. Perplexity is adding more local data. ChatGPT is improving its real-time accuracy. Gemini is getting better at conversational understanding.

By late 2025, the differences between these platforms will likely shrink. The businesses that are well-optimized across all platforms will benefit regardless of which tool a customer uses.

Our Recommendation

Do not pick one AI search platform to optimize for. Build a comprehensive GEO strategy that covers all of them:

  1. Maintain an excellent Google Business Profile (for Gemini)
  2. Build citations on authoritative directories and review sites (for Perplexity)
  3. Create detailed, scenario-specific website content (for ChatGPT)
  4. Keep your structured data clean and comprehensive (for all three)

The businesses that cover all their bases will win, no matter which AI search tool their customers prefer.
