AI Search Engines Ranked: Which One Sends the Most Traffic?
We analyzed traffic from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews. Here's which AI search engine sends the most visitors.
Everyone talks about AI search. But which AI engines are actually sending traffic to websites? And more importantly, which ones are sending traffic to small business websites?
We dug into the data, analyzed industry reports, and talked to businesses tracking their referral sources. Here’s the honest ranking.
The Ranking
1. Google AI Overviews: The Traffic Giant (By Default)
Traffic volume: Highest (but complicated)
Google AI Overviews technically send the most traffic simply because Google handles roughly 90% of all search queries. When an AI Overview appears and includes a source link, those clicks add up fast.
But here’s the catch: AI Overviews also reduce total click-through rates. Studies show that when an AI Overview appears, organic clicks below it drop by 25-40%. So Google’s AI is simultaneously the biggest traffic source and the biggest traffic reducer. Complicated, right?
Who benefits most: Businesses whose content gets cited directly in the AI Overview. If you’re one of the 2-3 sources cited, you might actually get more traffic than you would from a traditional organic listing.
2. ChatGPT Search: Growing Fast
Traffic volume: Moderate and accelerating
ChatGPT Search referral traffic has been growing steadily since launch. It’s still a fraction of Google’s volume, but the growth rate is impressive. Some businesses report ChatGPT as their third or fourth largest referral source, behind Google organic, direct, and social.
Who benefits most: Content-rich businesses with detailed websites. ChatGPT tends to cite (and link to) authoritative, specific content. Service businesses with strong online presence and review profiles also get recommended frequently.

3. Perplexity: Small Volume, High Quality
Traffic volume: Lower, but high-intent
Perplexity sends less raw traffic than ChatGPT, but the visitors it sends tend to be highly engaged. Perplexity users are typically in research mode, comparing options and looking for specific information. That translates to longer time on site and higher conversion rates.
Perplexity’s citation model (it links to sources directly in its answers) makes it one of the more transparent AI search engines for driving referral traffic.
Who benefits most: Businesses in industries where customers do significant research before purchasing. Healthcare, home services, legal, and professional services see the strongest results from Perplexity referrals.
4. Gemini: Google’s Other AI
Traffic volume: Moderate (mostly within Google ecosystem)
Gemini referral traffic is tricky to measure because much of it stays within Google’s ecosystem. When someone uses Gemini for a local query, the recommendations often link to Google Business Profiles rather than websites.
For businesses with strong GBP listings, Gemini can drive meaningful profile views, direction requests, and calls. But direct website traffic from Gemini is relatively low.
5. Apple Intelligence / Siri: The Dark Horse
Traffic volume: Low but growing
Apple’s AI-enhanced Siri and Apple Intelligence features are just beginning to drive referral traffic. The volume is small, but Apple’s installed base is enormous. As these features mature, Apple Intelligence could become a significant source of AI-driven discovery.
Who benefits most: Businesses with strong Apple Maps listings and complete, current online presence.
What the Data Tells Us
AI Search Traffic Is Additive (Mostly)
The biggest question businesses ask: “Is AI search stealing my Google traffic?” For most small businesses, the answer is no. AI search traffic is largely additive, meaning it comes from people who wouldn’t have found you through traditional Google search anyway.
These are users who prefer a conversational search experience or who are using AI for complex queries that traditional search handles poorly.
Quality Over Quantity
AI search visitors tend to be higher quality than average organic search visitors. They’ve typically received a specific recommendation (not just clicked a random search result), which means they arrive with higher trust and purchase intent.
Attribution Is Still Messy
Tracking AI search referral traffic isn’t as clean as tracking Google organic traffic. Some AI referrals show up as “direct” traffic in analytics, some as specific referral sources, and some are missed entirely. The actual AI search traffic to your site is likely higher than what your analytics reports show.
How to Maximize Traffic From AI Search
Based on the data, here’s where to focus your efforts:
1. Optimize for Google AI Overviews first. It has the highest volume by far. Get your content structured so Google’s AI wants to cite it.
2. Build ChatGPT Search visibility. Create detailed, authoritative content. Ensure your business is mentioned across authoritative third-party sources.
3. Don’t ignore Perplexity. The traffic may be lower volume, but the quality is excellent. Getting cited in Perplexity’s answers can drive meaningful business results.
4. Cover your GBP bases for Gemini. A complete Google Business Profile benefits you across Google’s entire AI ecosystem.
5. Track referral sources. Set up UTM parameters where possible and monitor your referral traffic reports in Analytics.
The Trend Is Clear
AI search traffic is small but growing rapidly. The businesses that optimize for it now will have a compounding advantage as these platforms continue to grow.
Traditional Google SEO should remain your primary focus. But adding a GEO strategy is increasingly important for capturing this new and growing traffic channel.
